US Feb new home sales down 3.9 pct to 848,000 units, lowest level since 2000
Sales of new homes in the US continued their free fall in February, dropping to the lowest level in almost seven years after a slump to a 13 year low in the previous month,, the Commerce Department said today.
Sales of new homes in the US fell by 3.9 pct in February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 848,000 units, the lowest level since June 2000.
The department said new home sales fell a revised 15.8 pct to 882,000 units in January, the sharpest one month decline since January 1994, when sales plunged 23.8 pct.
Economists expected sales to rebound in February to about 995,000 units.
New home sales have fallen 18.3 pct since February 2006, when 1.038 mln units were sold.
The median price of a newly sold home fell 0.3 pct from last February to 250,000 usd. That s the second consecutive month prices have fallen compared to a year earlier. The median price rebounded slightly from January s 243,200 usd.
The inventory of new homes on the market in February rose 1.5 pct to 546,000 units from January s inventory of 538,000 units. If the rate of sales stays at levels seen in February, the supply of new homes on the market would take 8.1 months to sell, up sharply from January s rate of 7.3 months and the highest monthly supply in 16 years. There was a 9.4 months supply of homes on the market in January 1991.
Sales fell in every region except the West. Sales in the Northeast plunged 26.8 pct to 41,000 units, while sales in the Midwest fell 20.0 pct to 124,000 units, the lowest level in a decade.
Sales in the South, the country s largest region, fell 7.0 pct to 450,000 units, the lowest level in four years. Sales in the West rose 24.6 pct to 233,000 units. |
