Confidence among U.S. consumers probably fell for fourth month in five in August as the housing market cooled and gasoline prices rose, before a report today.

The University of Michigan's preliminary index of consumer sentiment declined to 83.8 in August, the lowest in three months, from a July reading of 84.7.

The report would add to signs of economic weakness that prompted the Federal Reserve to suspend its two-year campaign of interest-rate increases last week.

The conflict in Lebanon, which drove energy prices higher, and news of a foiled plot to blow up airliners in London probably contributed to the decline in confidence.

The confidence report is due at 9:45 a.m. New-York time. Forecasts in survey ranged from readings of 80 to 86. The index has averaged 88.1 since monthly data were first compiled in 1978. [color=red/code]
