The no. of people filing new claims for unemployment insurance in the latest week rose more than expected to its highest level in 4 weeks.

First time claims rose 7,000 to 318,000 in the week ended September 16. Economists had expected about 310,000 new claims.

The four-week average of first time claims remained unchanged at 315,000.
Economists prefer the four-week average because it smoothes out fluctuations in the weekly data.

The number of people continuing to claim unemployment insurance fell 29, 000 to 2.46 mln in the week ending September 9. This is the lowest level since July 22.

The four-week average of continuing claims fell 5,500 to 2.48 mln, the lowest level since August 12.
